Rotary Club of Midtown Springfield

New to race ownership, Midtown Rotary has been involved on a volunteer basis since the Springfield Marathon began in 2013. We meet at noon every Tuesday at The Inn at 835 in Springfield. Learn more about us here.


The Springfield Marathon promotes Rotary's mission of educating youth in our community while fostering partnerships with the charities we support.

Race Management

Race Director

David Wortman is the Deputy Director of Community Development at the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. He previously worked as the Public Works Director for Mattoon, IL and served in the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic. He is the 2018-19 Midtown Rotary Club President.

David is a lifelong runner who enjoys supporting the Springfield running community. He has run many marathons and has paced both the Springfield Marathon and the Lincoln Presidential Half Marathon. He is excited to see his interest in running being employed to serve Midtown Rotary’s mission of supporting literacy in Springfield


Karel Homrig, M.S. Ed, is the executive director at Prevention First, a non-profit training and resource center specializing in the prevention of substance misuse. She has developed expertise in leading initiatives by engaging stakeholders,

subject matter experts, and community leaders in using data-driven decision-making processes to achieve desired behavioral health program outcomes. 

Karel is a Past President of Midtown Rotary, which will gladly put her diverse skillset to use as lead of the Springfield Marathon Operations Team.

Mission and Giving

John Kelker is the President of the United Way of Central Illinois and a Past President and Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Midtown Springfield.  John’s professional background includes working with community and social service agencies as well as the business community to fight for the basic needs, education, financial stability and health of every citizen in our community.

John led Midtown's efforts to develop the mission and vision for our race to support the academic achievement of students at Washington Middle School and Springfield School District 186.  Under John’s leadership, proceeds from the Springfield Marathon will support Rotary International Foundation, volunteer groups helping with the races and reading programs at Washington Middle School.


Lisa Ellis is a Charter Member and Past President of Midtown Rotary, and currently serves as Secretary for the club. She's a proactive team player and tactical planner with capacity to create and execute effective strategic marketing campaigns, product positioning and brand development plans to ignite sales and build long-term customer loyalty. 

Well experienced in development of sales collateral, media planning and media placement, tradeshows, branding initiatives, corporate websites and new business development, Lisa has already made a lasting impact on the Springfield Marathon brand.

Mia Woods is a proud member of Midtown Rotary and current works as the Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Illinois Capital Region. She is the mother of an amazing 6th grade student in District 186 and has lived in and supported the Springfield community for 7 years. In her first year as the lead for all things volunteer with the Springfield Marathon, Mia hopes to bring her know-how and a huge smile to all who make this great event happen. 


K. Todd Threnn is a Senior Credit Analyst for Security Bank in Springfield, IL and serves as a board member for Midtown Rotary. Todd was a key player for Midtown as the club transitioned from volunteer participation to Springfield Marathon race ownership. A committed community servant, Todd brings to the table previous race management experience from Montgomery County's Annual Old Settlers Fun Run/Walk. Todd is leading our Race Expo team, but serves as a resource and volunteer whenever and wherever a need arises!
